Reading
Reading and literacy were one of the key points of focus within the classroom of my PS1 placement. My TA estimated that she has personally invested approximately $40,000 of her own money into the classroom, with the bulk of that going towards literacy related resources. Students had the opportunity to work as class librarians, classifying new books that would into the classroom by genre. Each week, three students gave book talks, so throughout the course of a school year, each student would get the opportunity to produce and present 4 or 5 book talks. Each book talk is to be on a different genre than any previously done.
I was quite impressed by the continual encouragement surrounding reading, from home reading minute sheets for family members to sign, to opportunities within class to read silently, in partners, or in front of the class. The students were able to feel comfortable in reading at a level of which they are capable and not to be embarrassed if they couldn't read as well as some of their classmates.
Prior to each time book orders were available, students had a space on the whiteboard at the front of the class to write down books or book series that they would like to see added to the class library. The teacher would then have a discussion about the recommendations, such as why they should be chosen or what would be some good alternatives.

I have always been an avid reader. Here is a sampling of some authors I have read recently:
John Grisham
David Baldacci
Dan Brown
Seth Godin
Chris Guillebeau
Marianne Williamson
Brene Brown
Neale Donald Walsch
Kyle Mills
Stephen Frey
