Other terms for this type of literacy include observing or seeing. So, watching a play or movie, visiting an art gallery or museum, are areas in this aspect of literacy.
I was a bit surprised, but really shouldn't have been, at how enthusiastic the students were whenever there was a video to watch. I found it was often from the questions generated by the video that some of the best teaching occurred. There was probably a time when I might have cut off the questions, because they weren't "in the lesson". I have been able to learn how important it is for students to express their curiosity, and it provides a great opportunity for assessment and how well the class is "getting" the message in the lesson.
The primary focus of my teaching for PS1 has been science. I have found some great video and interactive websites that worked really well in the lessons:
